Main Visual and Logo
The Tokyo Legacy Half Marathon is an urban sporting event that is part of the legacy of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and Paralympics Games. This half marathon, held in the metropolis of Tokyo, brings together diverse runners to provide authentic, timeless value.
We want to share this new "TOKYO AUTHENTIC" spirit with the next generation of runners. For this year’s Key Visual, we aimed for a more aggressive and liberating expression, utilizing a dynamic layout that breaks beyond the frame. By employing slightly ambiguous depictions, we capture the essence of speed, acceleration, and vibration—focusing not on a sharp "point of focus," but on the "motion itself." This creates a visual momentum as if the runner's energy is bursting through the frame, drawing the viewer’s gaze into the physical sensation of the run. Set against the iconic roof structure of MUFG STADIUM (Japan National Stadium), we etch the raw, fleeting moment of the runner into a visual that represents Tokyo’s new "authentic" spirit.
The Tokyo Legacy Half Marathon logo is similar to the Tokyo Marathon logo design, but instead of straight lines, it features curved lines. It distinguishes itself apart from the Tokyo Marathon logo, hinting that this event is a part of the Tokyo Marathon yet different and unique in its own way. The smooth contour lines forming a circle symbolize inclusivity, expressing the hope that this half marathon would bring people together from all sectors of life.

Tokyo: An Inclusive City Connecting People through Sports
We are delighted to be able to hold the Tokyo Legacy Half Marathon 2026. This event aims to carry forward the legacy of the Olympic and Paralympic Games Tokyo 2020 into the future, connecting people, communities, and society through the power of sport. As the event marks its fifth edition, we will expand the number of participants to 18,000 and introduce a new wave start system, with the aim of creating a safer and more comfortable race experience. In addition, through the trial introduction of the “Duo Team” and the implementation of “+ONE Action,” we will further expand opportunities for each participant’s challenge and aspirations to contribute to society. The phrase “TOKYO AUTHENTIC,” featured in this year’s main visual, embodies the genuine appeal unique to Tokyo and our hopes for a running culture that will be passed on to the future. The image of runners setting out toward the future symbolizes the evolution and challenges of this event. We hope that the Tokyo Legacy Half Marathon 2026 will be a special day for all participants, one in which they can feel the joy of running and the connections between people. We sincerely look forward to welcoming you to Tokyo.
I would like to extend a heartfelt welcome to everyone from across Japan and the world who will be participating in the Tokyo Legacy Half Marathon 2026. This half marathon was established as an event that enables people of all levels of running experience and physical ability to share in the fun and excitement of sports, in order to carry on the legacy of the Olympic and Paralympic Games Tokyo 2020. With each edition, the race becomes even more widely embraced and continues to grow as a sporting event representative of Tokyo. To the participants, I hope you fully enjoy racing on a course through the vibrant streets of Tokyo, beginning and ending at MUFG STADIUM (Japan National Stadium), a venue used for the Tokyo 2020 Games and last year’s World Athletics Championships Tokyo 25. Sports have the power to connect people and to generate hope and vitality. I hope that the day of the event will be a wonderful, memorable day for all participants. With the power of sports, let us continue working together to make Tokyo an inclusive city where each and every individual shines.

Overcoming All Differences and Running Together Toward the Same Goal
We would like to warmly welcome everyone to the race, from the runners who will participate to all those who are helping to support it. We also wish to express our deep gratitude to the organizations, sponsors, volunteers and everyone else who is doing so much to make this race a reality. Thank you for your support and assistance. The start and finish points of the Tokyo Legacy Half Marathon have been placed at MUFG STADIUM (Japan National Stadium) as a way to carry on the legacy of the Olympic and Paralympic Games Tokyo 2020. In the marathon, both top athletes and general runners race on the same course, sharing the joy of running. The race provides a precious opportunity to connect people, communities, and society through running. From September to October this year, the Asian Games and Asian Para Games are being held in Nagoya, Aichi Prefecture, generating tremendous excitement, and we hope that the Tokyo Legacy Half Marathon carries on this excitement and brings even further energy to the world of athletics. Our desire is for this event to be one that holds a place in your heart and inspires you to take on new challenges, and that the legacy of sports continues to grow, from Tokyo deep into the future.
Under the slogan, “Anytime, Anywhere, Forever—Moving Forward! Making Sports More Accessible— ,” the Tokyo Sports Association for Persons with Disabilities is dedicated to transforming Tokyo into an inclusive sports city, enabling everyone to enjoy and participate in sports regardless of their disabilities. This race strives to be inclusive for participants with disabilities, and many individuals are taking part this year as well. The race’s greatest appeal is that participants overcome differences like age, gender, and disability to run together toward the same goal. This year marks the fifth year of the race since the Olympic and Paralympic Games Tokyo 2020. Through sports for people with disabilities, the Association is building a vibrant society where everyone, with or without disabilities, can enjoy life to the fullest. Finally, we wish all participants in this race the best of luck and express our heartfelt gratitude to everyone supporting this event.

SUSTAINABILITY INITIATIVES
The Tokyo Marathon Foundation will promote sustainability initiatives through the Tokyo Legacy Half Marathon, including charity and sports volunteer activities, in cooperation with official partners and collaborators to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the international community, and will manage the event to create an inclusive society in which everyone can participate, regardless of whether they are LGBTQ+, disabled, or not.
Initiatives to promote "Bottle-to-Bottle" horizontal recycling of PET bottles used during the race
In collaboration with our official partner Otsuka Pharmaceutical, we will separate and collect the plastic bottles provided to runners at each aid station, and use the collected bottles as raw materials for recycled plastic bottles. These recycled bottles will then be reused as beverage containers by Otsuka Pharmaceutical and other beverage manufacturers.
Paper cups used at Aid Stations are collected and recycled
We conduct paper cup recycling. Runners are asked to dispose of used cups in designated collection boxes at Aid Stations. The collected paper cups are then processed and recycled into raw materials for producing toilet paper.
Using electric vehicles along the course
In conjunction with the Tokyo Metropolitan Government's Zero Emission Vehicle promotion initiative, Porsche Japan Co., Ltd. will provide Taycan and Cayenne electric vehicles for use as the chief referee’s cars.
Runcycle
At the EXPO RUN CYCLE booth, we will set up collection boxes for used shoes and apparel. The collected shoes and apparel will be properly recycled through a recycling contractor, including being resold overseas for reuse, as well as undergoing material and thermal recycling.

Promotion of Reuse and Recycling
To reduce waste throughout the event, we will discontinue enclosing safety pins with bibs, reuse and recycle resources such as volunteer and referees’ wear and cardboard, and collect runners’ clothing and shoes for reuse.

360° VR Road Guide
The 360° VR Road Guide can be used by people who use wheelchairs, baby carriages, or the like at points along major roads which have been closed off (and are not crossable) during the marathon to safely reach the other side. Using 360° photos (not videos) taken along crossing routes, it turns users' smartphones into guide staff, providing clear guidance simply by tapping on the arrows on-screen. PARA ATHLETE RACE PREVIEW
The Tokyo Legacy Half Marathon is now in its fifth edition. On race day, October 18, the “Aichi- Nagoya 2026 Asian Para Games” (the “Asian Para Games”), a celebration for para-athletes in the Asian region, will also open. To the representative athletes from each country, we expect the runners to show powerful running that will serve as a cheer from Tokyo.
Wheelchair Race (Starts at 8:00 a.m.)
Thirteen athletes are registered in the men’s field, including the top three finishers from last year who were invited to compete. SUZUKI, Tomoki (Toyota Motor), eyeing his fifth consecutive title this year, seems to be a cut above the rest. However, expectations are high for last year’s runner-up, YOSHIDA, Ryota (SUS) and third-place finisher KISHIZAWA, Hiroki (Hitachi Solutions) to challenge him and heat up the race. In addition, there are high expectations for two rapidly improving young runners: last year’s fourth-place finisher, SASAKI, Rinpei (Hitachi Solutions) and fifth-place finisher TOYAMA, Katsumoto (Mitsubishi Corporation). Furthermore, this year, veteran racer HOKINOUE, Kota (LY Corporation) - a former Japanese record holder who has continued to compete in the Abbott World Marathon Majors in recent years - will be making his first-ever appearance at this event. These three are expected to form a chasing pack and work together to close the gap on the leaders.
As for myself, I am actually planning to race here for the first time in three editions. I felt that by sharing the experience of running this challenging course, I could send a meaningful message to the other competitors. While I am excited to race against the younger runners, I also hope to share some advice before the start and foster a sense of “let’s give it our all together.” The course is quite challenging; it features a long descent at the start, flattens out in the middle, and introduces another uphill section near the finish. Early positioning right after the start is key. Be sure to watch closely to see who establishes which position.
With an eye on the Los Angeles 2028 Paralympic Games - even though the half marathon is not a Paralympic discipline - this event will undoubtedly serve as a great springboard to build fitness and momentum for the upcoming marathon season. Predicting the exact times is difficult, but I hope the runners will take an aggressive approach, depending on the weather and their physical condition on race day. runner-up TSUCHIDA, Wakako (will raise) and third-place finisher TAKIMURA, Kazumi (ORACLE CORPORATION JAPAN) - along with one general participant.
Last year, after a head-to-head battle right before the finish line, NAKAMINE edged out TSUCHIDA for the victory. I expect the two of them to lead the pack again this year, but I hope the other two runners will stick close to them to achieve their own goals. I am looking forward to another exciting race like last year’s.
Para Athletes Race (Starts at 8:05 a.m.)
In the para-athlete race, MICHISHITA, Misato (Mitsui Sumitomo Insurance), a runner in the women’s T11/T12 visual impairment class, was invited. She is a top runner who won the gold medal in the marathon at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games and established a new T12 women’s world record (1:24:48) at the Tokyo Legacy Half Marathon 2023. Making her appearance for the first time in two years, she will also be aiming for her third championship victory this year. I am excited to see what kind of performance she will deliver.
Six athletes are registered in the women’s visual impairment class, including INOUCHI, Natsumi (Mizuho Financial Group) who holds the T11 world record (1:31:41). While MICHISHITA is expected to lead the pack and set the pace, the competition for the top positions will also be thrilling to watch.
Six athletes are registered in the men’s visual impairment class. Five of these athletes will compete in the T11/T12 class, which are eligible for awards. The past champions and top finishers will not be participating in this race as they have been selected to represent Japan at the Asian Para Games. In other words, whoever wins will be a first-time champion. I hope to see athletes like OISHI, Kosuke (ASICS), who significantly broke his personal best last year, race aggressively and seize this opportunity.
In addition, several athletes from the athletes with hearing impairment (T00) and intellectual impairment (T20) classes will also be competing. Furthermore, for the first time this year, an athlete from the lower limb impairment (T44) class has entered the race. Please cheer from the roadsides for these para-athletes as they run with all their might, each taking on their own personal challenges!

ELITE RACE PREVIEW
Elite Race (Starts at 8:05 a.m.)
The Tokyo Legacy Half Marathon, now in its fifth edition, achieved the “Elite Label” last year under the World Athletics Label Road Races program, which classifies the world’s leading road races. Once again, top athletes from both Japan and abroad will gather for this year’s event.
In the men’s field, all eyes will be on MUTISO, Alexander (Kenya). He competed for a Japanese corporate team until this past March, and is now based in Kenya as a professional runner. With a personal best of 57:59, he is expected not only to break the 60-minute barrier but also to challenge the course record of 59:52.
The Tokyo Legacy Half Marathon course features a mostly downhill profile in the first half, followed by a challenging uphill climb in the second half. While it is a difficult course for setting fast records, in addition to MUTISO, there is a great lineup of other exciting competitors, so I’m looking forward to a thrilling race. Expectations are high for a fast-paced race from the gun, driven by sub-60-minute international runners including invited athletes KIMUNYAN, Richard (Kenya), KAROKI, Bedan (Toyota Motor) as well as non-invited athlete ETIR, Richard (Tokyo International University) who finished second last time.
For the Japanese field, SHIMIZU, Kanta (SUBARU), AIZAWA, Akira (Asahi Kasei) and KIKUCHI, Shunya (Chugoku Electric Power) are competing as invited athletes. We hope to see them break the 61-minute barrier. If they can stick with the international pack, even faster times could be on the horizon. For AIZAWA, a former national record holder in the 10,000 meters, this race is expected to serve as a stepping stone for his breakthrough into the marathon. incredible personal best of 1:03:04 - the secondfastest time in history - and expectations are sky-high for her to significantly improve the course record (1:07:27). Additionally, MWANGI, Rebecca (Kenya), last year’s winner, and KAMAU, Tabithanjeri (Mitsui Sumitomo Insurance) who holds strong credentials in the 1:07 range, are scheduled to run.
For the Japanese invited athletes, the entry list includes SHINOZAKURA, Sora (Yokohama City Athletics Association), KANETOMO, Kazuna (Mitsui Sumitomo Insurance) and HAGITANI, Kaede (Saku City Athletics Association). We hope to see them break the 70-minute barrier. Since it is a mixed race, the female runners could unlock exceptionally fast times if they can effectively utilize packs of male athletes running at a similar pace.
The Tokyo Legacy Half Marathon also serves as a crucial stepping-stone race for athletes preparing for their future races. Last year, OSAKO, Suguru finished as the top Japanese runner in the men’s field, placing sixth overall with a time of 1:01:45, before going on to set a spectacular Japanese national record of 2:04:55 at the Valencia Marathon in December. While this race serves as a launchpad for winter marathons for corporate and professional runners, it offers collegiate athletes a crucial competitive arena ahead of the Hakone Ekiden relay. Against this backdrop, seeing how well the Japanese contenders can stick with the worldclass international field promises to be a major highlight.
Apart from the invited athletes, the entry list includes seasoned veterans with world championship experience, such as KAWAUCHI, Yuki (Aioi Nissay Dowa Insurance), SHITARA, Yuta (Nishi-Nippon Railway) and HATTORI, Yuma (Toyota Motor). Additionally, we are eager to see aggressive racing from the corporate league’s rising stars, including TAMEIKE, Itta (SGH) and SHIODE, Shota (Asahi Kasei), both of whom shone at this year’s Hakone Ekiden relay. Meanwhile, collegiate runners from universities such as Juntendo, Josai, Soka, Yamanashi Gakuin and Senshu will tackle the half marathon with their eyes set on the New Year’s races, including the Hakone Ekiden relay.

Comment I’m excited to be running as a guest runner again this year! Running the Legacy Half, which gave me the opportunity to reconnect with running, is also a challenge for who I am today. It’s such a special race, starting and finishing at MUFG STADIUM (Japan National Stadium) and turning around in Nihombashi, one of my favorite places. Let’s enjoy every exciting moment along the way and challenge ourselves to discover something new together!
Profile
Began long-distance running in junior high school with the goal of competing in ekiden relay races, and joined a corporate running team after graduating from high school. In her third year, she represented Japan in the 10,000m at the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games, finishing seventh. She later competed in two World Athletics Championships and won gold at the 1998 Asian Games in Bangkok. Shortly after being selected for the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games, she set the Japanese record in the 10,000m at the time. After retiring from competitive athletics in 2002, she took on a completely new challenge in the world of golf. Although she was unable to pass the professional qualifying test despite several attempts, the experience taught her the value of taking the first step into a new world. In 2018, she established the Sports Core Association and began promoting running and other sports activities. Soon after its establishment, she returned to athletics after a 15-year absence as a coach of a corporate running team, serving as head coach until 2023. She currently serves as representative of the Sports Core Association, working in areas including corporate health management and as an ambassador for marathon events. After being diagnosed with cervical cancer, she underwent treatment and made a full recovery. The experience deepened her awareness of both physical and mental health, and she now develops programs designed to help as many people as possible enjoy healthier lives. She also serves as an instructor for “Mini Tokyo Marathon,” an outreach program for elementary school students organized by the Tokyo Marathon Foundation.

Comment I am truly honored to serve as a guest runner for the Tokyo Legacy Half Marathon 2026. For my first half marathon, my theme is simply to enjoy it to the fullest. I want to appreciate having a body that can run, an environment that allows me to run, and the connections running brings, while enjoying every moment of the Legacy Half together with everyone!

She graduated from Saitama Sakae High School and Chuo University. 1990: 4th in the 800m at the Asian Games in Beijing 1991: Competed in the 4×400m relay at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, setting a new Japanese record 3rd in the 800m at the Asian Championships 1992: Won the Japan National Championships, equaling the Japanese record After struggling with declining performances and an eating disorder, she retired from competition. Following a 15-year break, she returned to the world of athletics after earning a World Athletics coaching qualification in 2013. Today, in addition to coaching at a university, she gives special classes at elementary, junior high, and high schools across Japan, sharing the joy of physical activity from a well-being perspective. She is also active as a public speaker. She also serves as an instructor for “Mini Tokyo Marathon,” an outreach program for elementary school students organized by the Tokyo Marathon Foundation.

Comment Comment Comment I am truly honored to have the opportunity to run with everyone again this year as a guest runner for the Tokyo Legacy Half Marathon. Taking on the half marathon distance may not be easy, but Tokyo’s beautiful scenery and the nonstop support along the course will surely give you the push you need. Building on last year’s experience, I’ll enjoy the race myself while doing my best to give even more runners a boost this year. See you on the course!

I’m Yukari Ishizawa, and I’m delighted to return as a guest runner again this year. After spending my competitive career fully focused on pursuing ambitious goals, there was a time after giving birth when I considered stepping away from running altogether. But running this race for the first time last year helped me rediscover the pure joy of running and a special time when I could truly feel like myself again. This event means that much to me, and I hope it becomes a wonderful experience that adds color to your lives as well. I’ll do my very best to bring even more excitement to the race, and I look forward to seeing you all there!
Profile
From high school through university, she specialized in the 800m. Despite having no experience in long-distance events or national ekiden races, she went on to join a corporate athletics team. Aiming to compete at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, she took on the women’s 3,000m steeplechase for the first time in 2018 at the age of 30. That year, she won her first Japan National Championships title and was selected to represent Japan at the Asian Games held in the same year. She also won her first national title at the 2020 Japan Cross Country Championships, but the Tokyo Olympic Games were subsequently postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite periods when restrictions made training difficult, she won her second Japan National Championships title that year. An injury at the following year’s Olympic trials, however, prevented her from competing at the Tokyo Olympic Games. She later moved her training base to her home prefecture of Ibaraki, where she continued competing while helping develop the next generation. She capped off her competitive career by winning the 2023 Katsuta Marathon before retiring. After retirement, she gave birth to her first child. She now works full-time in the IT Division of Hitachi Building Systems Co., Ltd. while raising her one-year-old child. She also gives lectures to students and serves as a guest runner to pass on her competitive experience to the next generation. She also serves as an instructor for “Mini Tokyo Marathon,” an outreach program for elementary school students organized by the Tokyo Marathon Foundation.

At this race, I hope to have a great time running while sharing plenty of smiles with the runners, supporters, and volunteers. Let’s make it a wonderful and memorable event together!

+ONE Action
60
We selected charity organizations primarily active within Japan as the recipients of our donations to help foster a culture of giving in Japan. Driven by our desire to encourage as many people as possible to participate easily as a first step toward charitable giving, we implemented the “+ONE Action” initiative, donating 500 yen on behalf of each participant. Participants were able to select a recipient—such as disaster relief or children’s support—that aligned with their personal values at the time of registration. We printed the message “Turn the ‘+ONE’ spirit into the power to run” on the bibs of those who made a donation.

“YNK” TURNING
POINT
We aim to further promote sports and event participation for individuals with disabilities. During the race period, we will host barrier-free trainings, Guide runner workshops, and para-athletics classes. To foster a well-being society, we are advancing initiatives that blend sports and art, promoting DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion). For the 2026 race, the turning point tower will once again feature an art installation, while a new initiative, the “Tokyo Cheer Back Bibs,” will invite runners to wear art as they run.
The Nihonbashi turning point tower is named the “YNK” TURNING POINT after the Yaesu, Nihonbashi, and Kyobashi (“YNK”) area, where Tokyo Tatemono is headquartered. For the 2026 race, the tower will feature
“20210425,” a work by HERALBONY contracted artist Aoi Tokinaga and winner of the Tokyo Tatemono | Brillia Prize at the HERALBONY Art Prize 2026. The same artwork will also be featured on the new “Tokyo Cheer Back Bibs,” allowing runners to wear art and “cheer back” the support they receive to those around them and to society. Through these initiatives, we aim to help create a more diverse and inclusive society through sports and art.
