50TOKYO LEGACY HALF MARATHON 2025 Upon entering Waseda University, Mami Tani (then named Mami Sato) joined the cheerleading club. However, while still a student, in the winter of 2001, she was diagnosed with bone cancer. In April 2002, her right leg was amputated at the knee, and she began using a prosthetic leg.After completing her treatment and physiotherapy, she returned to sports in January 2003. In 2004, she competed in the Paralympics for the first time, taking part in the long jump event at the Athens Paralympics. She also competed in the 2008 Beijing Paralympics.In March 2011, her family home in Kesennuma was damaged in the Great East Japan Earthquake, and she was unable to practice for some time. However, she refused to give up on her dream, and in 2012, she returned to compete in her third consecutive Paralympics in London, where she recorded a new personal best. In 2013, she gave a speech as a presenter at a general meeting of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), helping bring the Olympics to Tokyo in 2020.In 2014, she married, changing her name from Mami Sato to Mami Tani. In 2015, she had her first child, and in 2016, she announced that she would be switching course to compete in the para triathlon.From the 2017 season, she started taking on the World Series in earnest, and won the ITU World Triathlon Grand Final in September. This was the first time a Japanese national had won this world championship, with Tani taking first place in every event she took part in.At one point, due to a lack of competitors in her disability category, PTS4, she lost her qualification to compete in the Tokyo Paralympics. However, she chose to try her hand at the PTS5 category, which is for less severe disabilities, and was able to compete in the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics in 2021. She was also a flag-bearer in the opening ceremony.Tani works in the CSR Department of Suntory Holdings Ltd., where she is not only involved in a program for developing future generations, but also appears in the media and gives lectures to share the appeal of para sports and help create a truly inclusive society.Our guest runners will share the processes involved in the marathon, from runner entry to the day of the marathon itself, and what makes the Tokyo Marathon so appealing.
