TOKYO LEGACY HALF MARATHON 202551 Yuko Kawakami began long-distance running in junior high school out of a desire to compete in the Ekiden. Upon graduating from high school, she joined a corporate team.In her third year on the team, she was chosen as a competitor in the 10,000 m at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, where she finished in 7th place.She followed this up by competing in two World Athletics Championships, and then in 1998, she won the gold medal in the Asian Games in Bangkok.Immediately after unofficially qualifying for the 2000 Sydney Olympics, she posted a new Japanese record in the 10,000 m.In 2002, she retired from the sport and took on a new sport: golf.While she competed in several test events, she unfortunately failed to qualify. Nonetheless, she learned how wonderful it can be to step into a new world.In 2017, she established Sports Core, where she worked to promote sports, especially running.Immediately after establishing the organization, she returned to the world of track and field for the first time in 15 years by becoming the coach of a corporate team, a position she held until 2023.She is now the representative of Sports Core, where she serves as an ambassador for corporate health management and marathons. She was also diagnosed with cervical cancer, for which she began receiving treatment.After finishing her treatment, she was found to have made a full recovery, but the experience further heightened her focus on health (both physical and mental), and she designs plans for bringing better health to as many people as she can.Hanae Tanaka was born in Fukuoka Prefecture in 1990. After graduating from university, she entered the Dai-ichi Life Insurance Company, Limited. In 2013, she represented Japan in the World Athletics Cross Country Championships.In 2017, she moved to Shiseido Co., Ltd., and in 2018 she represented Japan in the marathon at the Asian Games, where she took 8th place.In 2021, she returned to Dai-Ichi Life Insurance, and then in 2023 she ended her career as a track and field athlete.Since retiring, she has occasionally served as a running instructor for marathon runners and a speaker at the Mini Tokyo Marathon, part of the Tokyo Marathon Foundationʼs Sports Legacy Program.Iʼm former Olympic track and field competitor Yuko Kawakami, and Iʼll be a guest runner in Tokyo Legacy Half Marathon 2025.I also took part in the marathon last year, but theyʼve given me the opportunity to run yet again.I enjoyed every step of my run in the Tokyo Legacy Half Marathon, from start to finish!I loved the course scenery, the other runners, the supporters, and challenging myself!
